PREPARATION AND APPLICATION OF TEST SOLUTION
- Differential loading: 0.65 g/L
- Controls: Yes
- Individual treatments were prepared by adding the appropriate amount of test material to laboratory dilution water. The treatments were slowly mixed (<10% vortex) on a magnetic striplate with a teflon coated stirbar for approximately 48 hours. During mixing, clear globules of the test material were observed throughout the water column. An oily surface slick was also observed in all treatments. After the mixing period, the water column appeared clear with clear globules of test material on the bottom. The Water Accomodated Fraction (WAF) of each treatment solution was siphoned from the middle portion of the battery jar using a glass siphon and silicone tubing and divided into 2 replicate chambers. Test chambers were covered with glass to minimize evaporation and/or volatilization.

*Treatment levels were converted from nominal to measured values as follows: (Treatment DOC value - control DOC value)/% carbon of the test material

Validity criteria fulfilled:
yes
Conclusions:
Under the test conditions, the 96 h LC50 of the test material to bluegill sunfish was determined to be > 65.88 mg/L based on exposure to a Water Accommodated Fraction (WAF) of the test material.
Executive summary:

A study was performed to evaluate the acute toxicity of the test substance to bluegill sunfish (Lepomis macrochirus) under static conditions. The study was conducted according to OECD Guideline 203, in compliance with GLP. Twenty fish per dose were exposed to a Water Accommodated Fraction (WAF) of the test substance at 0, 60, 120, 250, 500, 1000 mg/L (nominal). Test substance concentrations (as Dissolved Organic Carbon (DOC)) were analysed on Days 0 and 4. Mortality and behavioural effects were recorded at 24, 48, 72 and 96 h. Total mortality was observed in one replicate of the 1000 mg/L treatment. Since no other mortality occurred during the 96 h period, it is believed that the mortality was caused by contamination of the test chamber. Under the study conditions, the 96 h LC50 of the test substance to bluegill sunfish was determined to be > 65.88 mg/L (measured) based on exposure via a WAF (Targia, 1993).
