Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Description of key information

The LC50 (14d) for 2-phenoxyethanol was determined as > 340 mg/kg DM in a toxicity test with Eisenia fetida.

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Short-term EC50 or LC50 for soil macroorganisms:
340 mg/kg soil dw

Additional information

The key study investigated the toxicity of 2-phenoxyethanol (purity 99.9%) to earthworms (Eisenia fetida) according to OECD 207 (BASF SE, 2008). The clitellated adult earthworms were exposed for 14 days to test substance treated artificial soil. The LC50 after 14 days was determined to be >1000 mg/kg DM. -The percentage of organic carbon in the natural soil has not been corrected for. As the percent organic carbon was 10% and the agreed standard organic matter percent for tests is 3.4% a correction factor of 0.34 should be multiplied by all endpoints. Thus, the resulting EC50 (standard) is > 340 mg a.s./kg dry mass soil after 14 day

In a supporting study, the toxicity of 2-phenoxyethanol to earthworms was tested according to EU Guideline C.8 (Sasol Germany GmbH, 1994). Eisenia fetida were exposed to 1170 mg/kg waterfree test substance (purity 85.7%, contaminated with phenoxydiethanol) in waterfree substrate in a limit test. The LC0 based on mortality was determined as 1170 mg/kg soil dw.
