Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

The Rosin Adduct Esters category is a UVCB category produced by the reaction of rosin with fumaric acid or maleic anhydride followed by esterification with glycerol and/or pentaerythritol. Rosin acids are the predominant components of rosin (>85%). Rosin acids are composed of three skeletal classes of tricyclic carboxylic acids which share similar structure, but vary in the position of the double bonds and methyl groups. As each member of this category is a UVCB, the organic components will vary in type and proportion.

Rosin adducts with fumaric acid or maleic anhydride contain three carboxylic acid groups. In combination with a polyol, in principle a polymer can be formed. Depending on the stoichiometry and reaction conditions, polymerisation may occur or not. In each case, the esterification reaction results in a UVCB formed of various rosin acid adducts with varying numbers of ester bonds.

Experimental data is available for Resin acids and rosin acids, maleated, esters with pentaerythritol for each acute aquatic endpoint. Experimental data are also available for Resin acids and rosin acids, fumarated, esters with pentaerythritol and Rosin, fumarated, reaction products with glycerol and pentaerythritol for Daphnia. Both Daphnia and algal studies are available for Resin acids and rosin acids, fumarated esters with glycerol. All show no effects at the highest loadings tested in Water Accommodated Fraction studies. As aquatic toxicity data are available for all category members and LL/EL50 were not observed in any of the studies the acute toxicity of members of the category Rosin adducts esters is determined to be greater than the limit of solubility for these substances.
