Description of key information

Non oxidising

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Oxidising properties:
non oxidising

Additional information

The test was performed according to the EEC-directive 84/449 A-17. During the preliminary test the substance/cellulose mixture glowed, generated white smoke and carbonized. The barium nitrate/cellulose mixture during the same test burned for 55 sec with a yellow flame. Since the test item did not burn during the preliminary test, the first step of the main test was performed. During the main test the maximum burning rate of the prepared test item/cellulose mixtures was significantly minor than that of the reference mixture containing 60 % barium nitrate.

Justification for classification or non-classification

According to the CLP Regulation (EC 1272/2008), an oxidising solid means a solid substance or mixture which, while in itself is not necessarily combustible, may, generally by yielding oxygen, cause, or contribute to, the combustion of other material. An oxidising solid shall be classified in one of the three categories for this class using UN RTDG test O.1 (Part III, sub-section 34.4.1 of UN Recommendations on the Transport of Dangerous Goods, the Manual of Tests and Criteria). The test item/cellulose mixtures could not sustain a burning reaction and the substance has no oxidizing properties.
