Based on the weight of evidence from the large available database of findings in humans and animals it seems to be justified to use the STEL and the 8-hour TWA value (recommended by The Scientific Committee on Occupational Exposure Limits (SCOEL)) for establishing acute/short-term and long-term DNEL values for local health effects, respectively, in healthy workers exposed to sulfur dioxide.

8 -hour TWA value was adapted in a supplement by the MAK comission in 2011 and was set to 1 ppm (2.7 mg/m3).

Due to the toxicity profile of sulfur dioxide DNEL values for systemic effects are not relevant and, therefore, have not to be proposed.

Exposure via oral or dermal route is negligible due to the physical form (gas) of sulfur dioxide, hence, DNEL values for these exposure routes were not derived.

DNEL values for the general population are not relevant as sulfur dioxide is due to its hazardous properties neither in gaseous nor in liquid form available for the general poulation. Hence, contact with the substanc is highly unlikely except by indirect exposure via the environment.
