Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Description of key information

The risk is assessed on the basis of the EPM, which indicates no toxicity.

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Additional information

Titanium tetrachloride will not reach sediment compartments as it hydrolyzes in contact with water immediately to non-poisonous titanium dioxide (CAS 13463-67-7) and hydrogen chloride (CAS 7647-01-0). Effects may occur due to pH reduction caused by the dissociation of hydrogen chloride, but are not substance specific. The “Hazard Category 1” (ECHA 2008 Guidance on information requirements and chemical safety assessment Table R.7.11-2, p 131) applies thus for the hydronium ion (CAS 13968-08-6) causing the pH effects. Accordingly the risk can be assessed on the bases of the Equilibrium Partitioning Method (EPM) and no testing is required. Due to the absence of aquatic toxicity threshold levels no such level can be derived for the sediment. This is supported by the absence of effects to the marine mud shrimps at more than 35 g/kg sediment dw (Hudson 2007).

In conclusion it is assessd that the titanium tetrachloride hydrolysis products do not exhibit acute or chronic toxicity to sediment organisms. As no effect level was reached no threshold concentration was derived and no starting point for the calculation of sediment PNECs is given.

In conclusion titanium tetrachloride and its hydrolysis products do not pose a risk to sediment organisms.
