Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Environmental testing of HFC 134a has only been carried out on aquatic organisms. As HFC 134a is a gas, special procedures were employed to obtain solutions of the test substance and to prevent losses during the test. All exposure concentrations were analytically verified.

The available studies in bacteria, invertebrates, and fish indicate that HFC 134a has a very low acute toxicity to aquatic organisms. Read across to algae toxicity data for structurally similar fluorocarbons also indicates that the toxicity to algae of HFC 134a is likely to be low (>100 mg/l). Moreover, HFC 134a is a gas (boiling point -26°C) of low solubility; direct exposure of the aquatic environment is unlikely and any waterborn concentrations will rapidly partition to air.

Due to its low octanol/water partition coefficient (log Kow = 1.06), HFC 134a is unlikely to bioaccumulate.
