Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Description of key information

1,1,1,2 -tetrafluoroethane (HFC 134a) is a gas and it is expected that direct and indirect exposure of soil is therefore unlikely.

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Additional information

In accordance with column 2 of REACH annex IX, the soil simulation test does not need to be conducted as the substance is a gas and it is expected that direct and indirect exposure of soil is therefore unlikely. Additionally 1,1,1,2-tetrafluoroethane (HFC 134a) has a low potential for adsorption (log Kow = 1.06). When released to the environment HFC 134a will enter almost exclusively into the ambient air and has little tendency to partition to biota or soil. Because of its moderate sorption affinity HFC 134a is expected to be mobile in soil. The most important degradation process occurs in the atmospheric compartment. For that reason no biodegradation simulation studies were conducted except the biodegradation screening test in water.
