Description of key information

BASF (1999) provided results of 72 hr EC50 of >91.5 mg/L (biomass and growth) and 72 hr NOEC of 1.43 mg/L for Scenedesmus subspicatus.  The study was performed according to OECD 201 and GLP.

Key value for chemical safety assessment

EC50 for freshwater algae:
91.5 mg/L
EC10 or NOEC for freshwater algae:
1.43 mg/L

Additional information

A summary of toxicity to aquatic algae is presented in the table below:

Guideline  Species  Effect Concentration  Reference  Reliability
/  Several No effects concentration reported.

NTA has no toxic effects on the growth of algae.

Brouwer and Terpstra (1994)  4- secondary literature
OECD 201 Scenedesmus subspicatus 72hr EC10 = 22.8 mg/L (growth), 74.8 mg/L (biomass)72hr NOEC = 1.43 mg/L, 1.56 mg/L (conc. not meas.)72 hr EC50 = >91.5 mg/L (biomass and growth) BASF (1999) 1 -reliable without restrictions (GLP)
Equivalent to OECD 201 Scenedesmus capricornutum; Chlorella vulgaris; Scenedesmus subspicatus Scenedesmus capricornutum: LOEC = 5 -50 mg/L (dependent on growth medium); Chlorella vulgaris: LOEC = 5 -80 mg/L (dependent on growth medium); Scenedesmus subspicatus: LOEC = 5 -80 mg/L (dependent on growth medium) Millington et al (1988) 3 -not reliable
  Equivalent to OECD 201 Navicula seminulum 5-d EC50: (flowthrough, soft water) = 143 mg/L(static, soft water) = 198 mg/L(flowthrough, hard water) = 507 mg/L(static, hard water) = 507 mg/L Weaver (1967) 2 - reliable with restrictions
Other Guideline: cell multiplication inhibition test Scenedesmus quadricauda Test with Nitrilotriacetic acid; 8 day toxicity threshold = 8.3 mg/L NTA Bringmann & Kuhn (1977) 3 - unreliable
