Registration Dossier

Data platform availability banner - registered substances factsheets

Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

First-aid measures

Inhalation: Take the victim out into the fresh air and call the emergency services. If the victim has stopped breathing, give mouth-to-mouth resuscitation. If breathing is difficult, give oxygen.

Contact with skin: Brush material off skin, remove contaminated clothing and shoes. Wash soiled skin with soap. See a doctor if the irritation persists.

Contact with eyes: Rinse the eyes thoroughly under running water for at least 10 minutes. See a doctor or ophthalmologist if the irritation persists.

Ingestion: Rinse out the mouth and call a doctor; Do not induce vomiting

Fire-fighting measures

Extinguishing agents: USE dry sand or talc or zircon or argon containment or powder extinguisher (beware of hot flying particles).

Prohibited extinguishing agents: DO NOT USE WATER or wet substance, foam or CO2.

Specific risks:  Avoid impacts and friction due to pyrophoric risk with metal which increases when particle size decreases. Using water to put out burning zirconium releases hydrogen and may cause an explosion

Special protection equipment: Wear appropriate protective clothing and suitable gloves. Wear self-contained positive pressure breathing apparatus and fireproof clothing.

Accidental release measures

Personal precautions:  Prevent dust from forming.  Do not touch or walk through spilled material; Do not inhale dust;  Use appropriate protection equipment

Precaution to protect the environment: Do not release into sewage system.

Clean-up: Do not use vacuum cleaners  (except special vacuum cleaner) or paper. Collect carefully once dry (use an inert gas scavenger). Prevent  the formation and build-up of dust. Pick up waste and put in a sealed container.

Handling and storage

Handling: Avoid contact with the skin and eyes. Avoid impacts and keep away from burning material.

Prevent the formation of dust, powders, chips, etc.

Use only in well-ventilated areas (keeping ventilation to a reasonable level to prevent the accidental spillage of zirconium powder).

Scavenge with an inert gas (argon)  when filling.

Never mix zirconium chips or dust with wood, rags, grease, solvents, etc.

Take steps to avoid the build-up of electrostatic charges.

Do not let dust and chips build up except when packaged.

Storage: Store in a dry, well-ventilated area.

Store in argon-inerted containers.

Store in an area protected from bad weather and heat sources and away from incompatible products such as combustible products and oxidising agents

Exposure controls / personal protection

Personal protection

Respiratory protection: Use respiratory mask (FFP2 type or equivalent) for tasks where exposition to zirconium dust is important

Protecting the hands: Wear adapted gloves for operations with direct handling oz Zirconium

Protecting the eyes: Use safety googles . Use covering chemical safety goggles for activities with peak of exposure to Zirconium dust

Protecting the skin: wear appropriate clothing

Special hygiene measures: Do not eat, drink or smoke while working. Remove any soiled clothing. Wash your hands after handling the substance

Stability and reactivity

Chemical stability: Stable in normal pressure and temperature conditions. Zirconium powder is extremely flammable.

Condition to be avoided: Impacts, friction, heat sources, build-up of dust, matter in suspension in the air

Materials to be avoided: Water if the substance is burning (explosion risk).

Disposal considerations

Disposal of the product: Oxidation by controlled burning. Disposal should comply with the regulations in force.

Handling of containers: Contaminated containers should be treated in the same way as the chemical product they contain.
