Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Description of key information

The self-ignition temperature of ZirconiumShot was determined to be 389°C according to EEC method A.16. On the basis of expert judgement, this value is assumed to be relevant also for Zirconium sponge.

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Autoflammability / Self-ignition temperature at 101 325 Pa:
389 °C

Additional information

One source of information indicate that the auto flammability of zirconium is >200°C.(Kirk-Othmer, 1978- 1984)

According to Annex VII, section 7.12, column 2, the study does not need to be conducted when the substance ignites spontaneously with air at room temperature.

as stated in the harmonised Classification and Labelling (CLP N° 1272/2008, annex VI), zirconium powder is classified "pyr sol.1" and zirconium powder dry is classified "self heat 1"

Therefore the test can not be conducted for zirconium powder.

A test has been performed by SIEMENS on zirconium shot (granulometry > 0.5mm and <2.8mm) following EEC Method A 16. This test shows that the self-igition temperature of zirconium was 389°C, which is selected as key value. On the basis of expert judgement, this result is assumed to be relevant also for Zirconium sponge.
