Description of key information

The inhibition of the degradation activity of activated sludge is not anticipated when introduced in appropriate low concentrations.

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Additional information

The toxicity of Lysmeral to aquatic microorganisms was tested in a study according to OECD guideline 209 using domestic, activated sludge. After 180 minutes an EC10 of >100 mg/l was determined. An equivalent result was presented by a second study in compliance with OECD guideline 209. The respiration of domestic, activated sludge was inhibited by 20 % at an effective concentration >996.4 mg/l after 30 minutes (BASF AG, 1988). Comparable results were determined in studies focusing on single bacteria species. Two tests on the oxygen consumption inhibition by Lysmeral in Pseudomonas putida detected an EC50 of > 80000 mg/l and an EC0 of 2468 mg/l respectively (BASF AG, 1988, 1995).
