Description of key information

According to 3 studies including SEM, dry granulometry (Malvern) and SIEVING, the mean diameter of DETU (1,3-diethyl-2-thiourea)  is between 500 et 1000 um. About 8% of particles are higher to 1000 um = 1mm, and only some percents (ca 4%)  are lower to 63%. 
DETU is not considerer as dusty (low dustisseness)

Additional information

Three methods are used for granulometry calculation:


1/ SEM:Using scanning microscopy observation, DETU form of particles can be observed. Two types of forms are shown:


-particles of rather large oval sizes with diameters between 200 microns and 2 mm,


-and particles with multiple fractures with dimensions that can be reduced up to 20um, the great length generally exceeding 50-100 microns.


It would appear that the DETU be particularly prone to fracture (brittle molecule) and having a particle distribution between 20 and 2000 microns, the particles are rather large.


 


2/ Dry laser measurement (Malvern):A study was performed at GRL (Arkema) to investigate the particle size distribution (granulometry) on one batch of the test substance EKALAND DETU CR (1,3 -diethyl-2 -thiourea). The study was conducted according to ISO 13320- 1 “International standard for Laser Diffraction Measurements – Principles of Laser diffraction” and in accordance with OECD Test Guideline 110. The mean particle size, number in volume, of DETU PD test item, is determined to be about 375µm, with 10% of particles presenting a diameter less than 125µm, and 10% of particles presenting a diameter larger than 700µm.


 


3/ Sieving:According to a granulometry study (sieving) OECD 110 made at MLPC International, the mean diameter of DETU is between 500 and 1000 um. 6% of the particles are higher to 1000 um = 1mm and only 4% are lower to 63um.
