Description of key information

Acutely very toxic for aquatic organisms.

Key value for chemical safety assessment

LC50 for freshwater fish:
0.54 mg/L

Additional information

The toxicity of Triclosan to fish was tested in a guideline study following EEC Directive, Annex V, Part. C.l. Zebra fish were exposed to the substance for 96 hours in a static system. At test termination a LC50 of 0.54 mg/l based on measured data was determined (Ciba-Geigy1990). A comparable result was obtained by a study set up according to U.S.-EPA guideline 66202/3-75-009. The study was conducted with Pimephales promelas as test organism in a static system. The LC50 after 96 hours was 0.26 mg/l based on nominal concentrations (Procter & Gamble 1990).

In a further study conducted with Lepomis macrochirus as test organism in a static system; the 96 -h LC50 was 0.37 µg/L (95% CL: 0.32 - 0.44 mg/L; nominal; Orvos et al., 2002). The study was performed according to US EPA national standards. Analytical monitoring was not performed.

The 96 -h LC50 was determined to be 4.37 mg/L for the transformation product methyltriclosan (CAS 4640 -01 -1). The study was performed without analytical monitoring, a guideline is not given, nevertheless, the basic data are given.

An overview on the available reliable data on the acute toxicity to fish is given in the following table.
