Additional information

Auto-flammability of Terpene Hydrocarbon Alcohols using read across from alpha Terpineol.

Introduction

Terpene hydrocarbon alcohols have the followingconstituent types of substances: Solely hydrocarbons-terpene type, Alcohol-type, Ketone-type and Ether-type all having a saturated or unsaturated cyclic hydrocarbon backbone. There is no experimental auto-flammability information available. According to REACH Annex XI 1.5, information can be generated by other means, i.e. applying alternative methods such as QSARs, grouping and read-across. The autoflammability information of alpha-Terpineol is used for read across.

Hypothesis: Terpenes hydrocarbon alcohols have the same auto-flammability as alpha-Terpineol.

Available information: Alpha-Terpineol is tested in an A15 (Rel. 1) test and has an experimental auto-flammability temperature of 275°C.

Analogue justification

According to Annex XI 1.5 read across can be used to replace testing when the similarity can be based on a common backbone and a common functional group. When using read across the result derived should be applicable for C&L and/or risk assessment and it should be presented with adequate and reliable documentation, which is presented below.

Analogue selection: For Terpene hydrocarbon alcohols the substance alpha-Terpineol is selected as the major representative constituent and because auto-flammability information was readily available.

Structural similarities and differences: Alpha-Terpineol is an alcohol which represents the major part of the Terpene Hydrocarbon alcohols.

Physical chemical properties: For liquids the boiling point and flashpoint are the key features for flammability. Both these properties are similar for Terpene hydrocarbon alcohols and alpha-Terpineol: the boiling points are 207.8 and 218.9°C, respectively and flashpoints are 77 and 91°C, respectively. Based on these similarities for Terpenes Hydrocarbon Alcohols a similar auto-flammability as for alpha-Terpineol can be predicted and results in a value of 275°C.

Uncertainty of the predictions: There are no uncertainties other than those addressed above.

Conclusion on hazard

For Terpene hydrocarbon alcohols no experimental information is available for auto-flammability but for alpha-Terpineol, the major constituent, such information is available: 275°C, which can be used for read across.

Final conclusion: Terpene hydrocarbon alcohols have an auto-flammability of 275°C.
