Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Description of key information

Aquatic toxicity studies of naphthenic acids, nickel salts are not available. Thus, read-across to the assessment entities soluble nickel substances and naphthenic acid is applied since the ions of naphthenic acids, nickel salts determine its fate and toxicity in the environment. A 30-min EC50 of 33 mg Ni/L (Cokgor et al 2007) was derived for the respiration inhibition of activated sewage sludge by nickel. Data for naphthenic acid point to low toxic potential to aquatic microorganisms since an inhibition was not observed up to and at 100 mg/L in a biodegradation test. However, studies on Vibrio fisheri produced an EC50 of 13.0 mg/L for the structural analogue of naphthenic acid, i.e. cyclohexanepentanoic acid.
