Data platform availability banner - registered substances factsheets

Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Administrative data

First-aid measures

The neodymium hydride reacts spontaneously with the humidity or oxygen present under ambient conditions to neodymium oxide or neodymium

hydroxide and consequently the neodymium hydride is no longer existent.

Fire-fighting measures

Suitable extinguishing media:

Dry sand, metal fire powder, carbon granules  or carbon powder

For safety reasons unsuitable extinguishing agents: Water, Carbon dioxide

Keep spilled material dry and collect with metal shovel. Immediately overlay with inert gas (argon).

In case of contact with water: Formation of hydrogen: explosion hazard

Burning powder should be reacted to exhaustion on a secure place.

Do not empty into drains or the environment.

Accidental release measures

Keep spilled material dry and collect with metal shovel. Immediately overlay with inert gas (argon).

In case of contact with water: Formation of hydrogen: explosion hazard.

Burning powder should be reacted to exhaustion on a secure place.

Do not empty into drains or the environment.

Handling and storage

This substance is handled under Strictly Controlled Conditions in accordance with REACH regulation Article 17(3) for on-site isolated intermediates and, in case the substance is transported to other sites for further processing, the substance should be handled at these sites under the Strictly Controlled Conditions as specified in REACH regulation Article 18(4). Site documentation to support safe handling arrangements including the selection of engineering, administrative and personal protective equipment controls in accordance with risk-based management systems is available at each manufacturing site. Written confirmation of application of Strictly Controlled Conditions has been received from every affected Distributor and Downstream Processor/User of the Registrant’s intermediate.

Fill and transfer only under inert gas.

Containers must be clearly and indelibly identified.

Store in cool, dry conditions under inert gas in well sealed receptacles.

Keep ignition sources away - Do not smoke.

Ensure good ventilation/exhaustion at the workplace.

Provide a suitable suction with filter and good ventilation of the working area for all processing steps.

Do not breathe dust.

Exposure controls / personal protection

Respiratory protection: In the case of dust formation, breathing apparatus must be worn (breathing mask, apparatus with particle filter P2).

Skin protection: Avoid repeated and prolonged contact with the skin, use protective heat-protective gloves (e.g. leather) and flameproof protective clothing.

Eye protection: Tightly sealed goggles.

Keep away from foodstuffs, beverages and feed.

Wash hands before breaks and at the end of work.

Skin protection according to VAC protective plan.

Stability and reactivity

Thermal decomposition /conditions to be avoided: It does not degrade if properly used with a protective gas (argon).

Attention:

In combination with air or atmospheres with an oxidizing effect fine powders can develop spontaneous heating or become

pyrophoric.

Dangerous reactions: Hydrogen is released when it comes into contact with water, and explosive gaseous mixtures can develop.

At high temperatures the substance has an exothermic reaction in combination with nitrogen.

Materials to be avoided: Aqueous media (e.g. acid, alkaline solutions, water), substances with an oxidizing effect

Dangerous decomposition products: Hydrogen

Disposal considerations

Not applicable: use as an intermediate
