VCA has been found to hydrolyse rapidly (t1/2 < 12 hrs) upon contact with water, to form two main degradation products: Chloroacetic acid (CAS 79-11-8 / EC 201-178-4) and Acetaldehyde (CAS 75-07-0 / EC 200-836-8). An expert assessment on the biodegradability of these degradation products concluded both substances are readily biodegradable based on existing literature.

Description of key information

In accordance with Annex VIII of REACH, the study does not need to be conducted because the substance hydrolyses rapidly on contact with water and the degradation products are found to be readily biodegradable and the applied test concentrations are in the range of concentrations that can be expected in the influent of sewage treatment plant.
