Based on the overall information available for thioglycolic acid,
its salts but also oxidation product, the substances can be considered
as harmful for aquatic species (invertebartes and algae).
Diammonium dithiodiglycolate occurs rapidly in the environment
based on practical case (Devaux, 2003) when thioglycolic acid is
released. Diammonium dithiodiglycolate
data also exists for Daphnia and demonstrates that this form is
neither toxic nor harmful. One could consider that thioglycolic acid is
also of no concern for Daphnia based on its half-life in water.
Nevertheless as valid data exists on the thioglycolic acid, the
applicant prefers to retain this result and concludes that thioglycolic
acid is harmful to Daphnia.
