Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Additional information

Etherdiamine is a surface-active substance. It consist of a hydrocarbon part which on its own would be poorly soluble in water, and a etherdiaminopropane group which will be hydrophilic when protonated or when an acetate salt is formed. The free amine substance is a strong organic base. Under environmental conditions however the main fraction will at least be once or twice protonated.

Etherdiamine is thus for more than 99% in the ammonium form under environmental conditions. This means that it will behave as a salt in water and will have a very low vapour pressure. The solubility of etherdiamine will be influenced by the pH and is difficult to determine because of the surface active properties. As an alternative as suggested by the REACH guidance R.7 the CMC at pH 7 was determined. Evaporation from water is based on the low vapour pressure and the observed CMC value of 1.3 g/L very unlikely. The actual dissolved concentration in water will be very low as etherdiamine will sorb strongly to sorbents both based on hydrophobisity and ionic interaction where the ionic interaction will govern the partitioning process.
