Executive summary:

The authors additionally reported outcomes for various aquatic ecotoxicology studies performed with PTA. A common feature to all tests was the use of dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) as a co-solvent, applied at a rate of 0.1% (v/v), i.e. 1.0 mL/L. It should be noted that this concentration is 10x higher than the maximum co-solvent concenttration (0.1 mL/L) recommended in various aquatic test guidelines. Few experimental details are reported in all cases.

D. magna: 21d chronic toxicity: Followed OECD TG 211 (2012), ten replicates with one parental daphnid each, treatments: 0 (control and DMSO control), 0.12, 0.38, 1.11, 3.33 and 10 mg PTA/L. Three medium renewals/week, water quality measured at each renewal. No analytical verification of exposure concentrations. Adult mortality and juvenile numbers recorded daily and parental body lengths measured at D21. Count data not reported. Significant reduction in juvenile production at 10 mg/L, not stated whether in relation to untreated or DMSO control, or mean of both. Intrinsic rate of population increase >1. Survival and reproductive NOECs were 10 and 3.3 mg PTA/L. M. macrocopa (sp. indigenous to Korea) 7d chronic toxicity: Followed published protocol, ten replicates with one parental animal each, with same range of treatments as for D. magna. Three medium renewals/week, water quality measured at each renewal. No analytical verification of exposure concentrations. Surviving adults and juvenile numbers were recorded daily.

Count data not reported. No significant difference indicated by ANOVA, but numbers of juveniles/adult were "significantly decreased" in a dose-response manner (beta = -0.217, r-squared = 0.789, p for trend = 0.006), not stated whether in relation to untreated or DMSO control. 7d survival and reproduction NOECs were 10 mg PTA/L. O. latipes 40d ELS test: Followed OECD TG 210 with unspecified "minor modification", 60 eggs per treatment at 0, 0.01, 0.1, 1.0 and 10 mg TPA/L, with 5 replicates per treatment. Report ambiguous as to whether DMSO co-solvent was used in this test.
