Additional information

The short term toxicity of TBBPA to aquatic invertebrates was investigated in 4 studies:

1) Blankinship et al. (2003): 48-hour study in Daphnia magna under flow-through conditions at nominal concentrations of 1.2 and 1.8 mg/L (average measured concentrations 1.2 and 1.8 mg/L). No significant effects were detected in exposed Daphnia over the 48-hour period. The 48-hour NOEC was 1.8 mg/L and the 48-hour LC50 was >1.8 mg/L.

2) Union Carbide Environmental Services (1978): 48-hour study in Daphnia magna under static conditions at nominal concentrations of 0.32, 0.56, 1.00, 1.80, 3.20 mg/L. The 48 hour LC50 was 0.96 mg/L and the 48 hour no effect level was observed to be <0.32 mg/L.

3) Surprenant, D.C. (1989): 96-hour study in Crassostrea virginica under flow-through conditions in saltwater at nominal concentrations of 19, 32, 54, 90 and 150 µg/L (measured (mean) concentrations 18, 32, 51, 87 and 150 µg/L. The 96-hour EC50 was calculated to be 98 µg/L and the NOEC established was <0.18 µg/L, the lowest measured concentration of TBBPA tested. Reduction in shell deposition was 60% among oysters exposed to the highest test concentration (150 µg/L). Shell deposition was reduced by 47 to 33% in the remaining treatment levels (87 - 18 µg/L). This study is not used for risk assessment because the impact of the effect on shell deposition is unknown.

4) Wollenberger et al. (2005): 48-hour study in Acartia tonsa under static conditions in saltwater at 6 nominal concentrations in the range 100 to 500 µg/L. The 48-hour LC50 was 400 µg/L.
