Three tests on the toxicity of the substance to microorganisms are available.
A possible respiration inhibition induced by 3,7-dimethyloctan-3-ol in Pseudomonas putida was tested in study following German standard, DIN 38412 Part 27. After 30 minutes of incubation an EC10 of 450 mg/l was determined (BASF AG, 1988).
In a short-term respiration test performed according to OECD guideline 209 the respiration of activated industrial sludge was determined. After 30 minutes of exposure an EC50 > 1000 mg/l was determined (BASF AG, 1996). In a second single species test on the growth of Tetrahymena pyriformis in presence of 3,7-dimethyloctan-3-ol was determined. After 40 hours an EC50 of 72 mg/l was reported.
