Description of key information
No experimental data on the hydrolysis of sodium lactate are available. In aqueous environments, sodium lactate fully dissociates into Na+ ions and lactate ions. Therefore, transport and distribution behaviour of sodium lactate in the environment can be understood in terms of the transport and distribution behaviour of sodium chloride and lactic acid.
In accordance with Regulation (EC) No 1907/2006 (REACH) annex VIII, column 2, a hydrolysis study is not required if the substance is readily biodegradable.
Lactic acid is readily biodegradable and the sodium compound is as such not hydrolysable.
