Description of key information

As the distribution model predicts that releases of 1,1,1-trichloroethane to the environmental will not accumulate in soil or sediments in quantities > 0.01% of the quantity released into the environment  there is no real requirement for addressing toxicity to soil bacteria as they will not be exposed to the material.  However, one study is available in literature that addresses this issue but it is rated unreliable. On the basis of this study it is evident that ubiquitous soil and water nitrifying bacteria possessing the ammonia monoxygenase enzyme are capable of biologically degrading halogenated aliphatic compounds.  Furthermore as the enzyme system involved in the compounds degradation is not adversely affected by these materials the rate of degradation will be dependent entirely on the quantity of ammonia present in the surrounding medium.
