Additional information

Data on the acute toxicity of the target substance isobutyl laurate (CAS 37811-72-6) to aquatic algae is not available. The assessment was therefore based on studies conducted with the structurally similar substances Isopropyl myristrate (CAS 110-27-0) and Fatty acids, C16-18 and C18-unsatd., iso-Bu esters (CAS 84988-79-4) as part of a read across approach, which is in accordance with Regulation (EC) No. 1907/2006, Annex XI, 1.5. Further justification is given within the overall summary chapter 6.1 and within the analogue justification in section 13.

The toxicity of the source substance Isopropyl myristrate (CAS 110-27-0) to Desmodesmus subspicatus was tested according to EU Method C.3 and to GLP (Rieche, 1995). The test was performed as a limit test at a nominal substance concentration of 100 mg/L. Two parallel test approaches were performed. In the first approach the test solution was not filtered before the algal cells were added whereas in the second approach the test solution was filtered before use. No effects on the algal growth rate were observed after 72 hours of exposure (ErC50 (72 h) > 0.05 mg/L, measured) in the filtered emulsion of the test medium. In the unfiltered emulsion, presumably physical effects were observed leading to an ErC50 (72 h) < 100 mg/L, nominal.

This key study conducted with Fatty acids, C16-18 and C18 unsaturated isobutyl esters (CAS No. 84988-79-4) was performed as a limit test according to the EU guideline 92/69/EWG and GLP (Berger, 1995). The test organism Scenedesmus subspicatus was exposed to the test substance in a static system for 72 hours, at the nominal test concentration 100 mg/L. The test was performed with and without separation of undissolved test material. With undissolved test substance present, algal growth was significantly inhibited. However, when the undissolved phase was separated, no effects on growth were observed. The inhibition can be thus regarded as associated physical effects caused by the undissolved material present. It can be concluded that the substance has no toxic effects on test organism up to the limit of water solubility.

Based on the results of the read across substance toxic effects of isobutyl laurate (CAS 37811-72-6) to aquatic algae are not expected.
