Based on evaluation of the substance for explosive groups, oxygen balance and comparison with a structural analogue, it was concluded that test material would not exhibit explosive properties.
The oxygen balance of the test material is -227 which contributes to an "overall energy release potential" of "low" according to the CHETAH program (ASTM, 2002). In addition, the test material does not contain any of the "explosive groups" (Bretherick 1999).
To further support these statements, a structural analogue of the test material, 3-chloro-o-xylene, was thermally stable in a boiling point determination (Reimer, 2004). In this test, the structural analogue was heated in a reflux apparatus to the BP of 191.3 °C at 102.3 kPa.
Based on this information, it was concluded that test material would not exhibit explosive properties under the conditions of the EU Method A.14 test.
Justification for classification or non-classification
In accordance with the criteria for classification as defined in Annex I, Regulation (EC) No 1272/2008, the substance does not require classification with respect to explosiveness.
