Tributyl acetylcitrate is an organic, colourless, slightly viscous liquid at standard conditions. It has a very faint, sweet herbaceous odor. At high levels (e.g. 1000 ppm emulsion in water), it has a mild, fruity, non-descript flavor. The pour point was determined to be -57°C at 1013 hPa (ASTM D97-02). The melting point is reported to be -80°C at 1013 hPa. The boiling point of tributyl acetylcitrate was found to be 331°C at 976.4 hPa (OECD Guideline 103, EU Method A.2, EPA OPPTS 830.7220, ASTM E 537-07). The density was determined to be 1.0528 at 20°C (ASTM D 4052-96, EPA OPPTS 830.7300, OECD Guideline 109, EU Method A.3). The relative density of tributyl acetylcitrate is reported to be 1.046 at 25°C. According to REACH regulation (Annex VII, 7.14, column II), the study on granulometry does not need to be done if the substance is marketed or used in a non-solid or granular form. The vapour pressure of ATBC is estimated by a generally accepted calculation method (EPISUITE 4.00; MPBPVP v1.43) to be 0.0494 Pa at 25°C. The n-octanol/water partition coefficient log Kow was determined to be 4.86 at 40°C and pH 7.1 (EPA OPPTS 830.7570, OECD Guideline 117, EU Method A.8). The column elution method according to EEC A.6 and OECD 105) proved to be not applicable for tributyl acetyl citrate (increasing water solubility with increasing flow rate). Therefore the water solubility was estimated by overlaying water with the test substance and analysing the water phase after addition of internal standard (n-decane) and liquid/liquid extraction (recovery rate at a water solubility of 4.49 mg/L: 100%) via GC/FID. A water solubility of 4.49 mg/L at 20°C was found (mean value of 4 measurements: 2 replicates/concentration; pH 6.7 -6.8). According to the classification scheme, tributyl acetyl citrate can be regarded as slightly soluble. Tributyl acetylcitrate is soluble in ether and alcohol. The surface tension of tributyl acetyl citrate was found to be 54.6 mN/m at 4 mg/L. According to the criteria of the guideline EEC A.5, tributyl acetyl citrate has to be regarded as surface active. The flash point of tributyl acetylcitrate was found to be 217.9°C at 1017 hPa (ASTM D 93-02, EPA OPPTS 830.6315, EU Method A.9). According to REACH Regulation (Annex VII, 7.12, column II), the study on auto flammability does not need to be done for liquids which do not ignite in contact with air, e.g. with a flash point >200°C (see above). According to REACH regulation (Annex VII, 7.10, column II), the study on flammability does not need to be done for liquids. The relevant endpoint for liquids is the flash point. According to REACH regulation (Annex VII, 7.11, column II), the study on explosiveness does not need to be done if the substance does not contain chemical groups indicating explosive properties. According to REACH regulation (Annex VII, 7.13, column II), the study on oxidising properties does not need to be done if based on the structure oxidising properties are not to be expected. According to REACH regulation (Annex IX, 7.15, column I), the study on stability in organic solvents and identity of relevant degradation products needs only to be done if this property is regarded as critical. According to REACH regulation (Annex IX, 7.16, column II), the study on the dissociation constant does not need to be done if testing is not possible from scientific point of view. Tributyl acetyl citrate does not contain chemical groups prone to dissociation. The kinematic viscosity of tributyl acetylcitrate was determined to be 40.4 mm²/s at 20°C and 15.58 mm²/s at 40.0°C (ASTM D445-06, EPA OPPTS 830.7100, OECD Test Guideline 114).
