Topical Scientific Workshop on Risk Assessment for the Sediment Compartment
7-8 May 2013, ECHA, Helsinki, Finland
The Topical Scientific Workshop on Risk Assessment for the Sediment Compartment, held on 7-8 May 2013, attracted over hundred world-wide experts from Europe, North-America and elsewhere representing academia and regulatory scientists from government and business. For two days, these experts brainstormed and developed updated scientific principles for assessing the ecological risks of chemical substances for freshwater and marine sediments with a one common aim: setting the scientific principles to be used in the regulatory context.
The active role of experts via a set of structured consultations was an essential element in the preparatory phase of the workshop contributing to the drafting of the "thought starter papers", the selection of the case studies and the poster exhibition.
The Workshop programme consisted of invited speakers' presentations on the use of risk assessment in the regulatory context and selected case-studies. The six break-out groups focused on three topics that were discussed from different complementary aspects: Topic 1 Risk Assessment: Problem definition and conceptual model: Prospective risk assessment / Retrospective risk assessment, Topic 2 Exposure assessment: Organic chemicals and pesticides / Metals and Topic 3 Effect assessment: Effect assessment using tests on sediment organisms / Integrated testing strategies, EPM and use information from other taxa.
The expert consultations continued in summer 2013 when the Workshop participants had a chance to identify research and development needs as well as to give comments to the Workshop Proceedings before its publication at ECHA website.
The Proceedings report summarises the outcome of the discussions and serves as a regulatory state of the art for risk assessment in the sediment compartment. It is highly relevant as a scientific background in improving the approaches used in different regulatory frameworks both in the EU and internationally.
