IUCLID now also ready for Biocidal Products Regulation

ECHA/NA/13/15

The new version of IUCLID 5 has been released. Applicants who are getting ready for the new Biocidal Products Regulation, entering into operation on 1 September 2013, can now start to organise their data in the IUCLID format.

Helsinki, 2 April 2013 – To fully support the preparation of applications under the Biocidal Products Regulation, which will enter into operation on 1 September 2013, new dossier types have been created in IUCLID 5.5. They can be used for preparing application for approval of an active substance or for authorisation of a biocidal product under the new Regulation.

The structure of the biocides dossier in IUCLID follows the order in which the information requirements are presented in the Biocidal Products Regulation. This enables the applicants to use the regulation as a guide when preparing their dossier and in this way simplifies their work. Detailed instructions on how to prepare the biocide application dossiers will be made available by ECHA at a later stage.

As with previous IUCLID releases, IUCLID 5.5 accepts all files created by previous IUCLID versions. The compatibility with IUCLID 5.4 has been extended for the IUCLID files prepared for REACH purposes: REACH dossiers and datasets prepared in the new version of IUCLID can still be imported to and modified in IUCLID 5.4. This means that companies who are already preparing their REACH dossier for the upcoming registration deadline can continue working with IUCLID 5.4 and only update to the new version when it is most convenient for them. Those who wish to work on biocides dossier can do so right after they have updated to IUCLID 5.5.

IUCLID 5.5 also includes 13 new templates for nanomaterials. Companies can now store information related to the physical-chemical properties specific to nanomaterials in the IUCLID database. These new templates have been agreed at the OECD level.

As with previous versions of IUCLID 5, the upgrade includes a migration step which means that data from the previous installation can be migrated to the new one. Before starting the migration, it is important to save a backup of your database. All IUCLID plug-ins are available on the IUCLID website and can be downloaded from there to be used in the new IUCLID 5.5.

What is IUCLID 5?

IUCLID 5 is a software application that can be used to store information on chemicals and prepare a dossier that is submitted to authorities to comply with legal requirements. In addition to the REACH Regulation and other international legislations, IUCLID is the software that is used to fulfil the requirements of the Biocidal Products Regulation.
