Workers - Hazard for the eyes

DNELS for worker population were derived from the most sensitive endpoint, a chronic toxicity study in which rats received 4% NaCl in the diet for 2 years. High blood pressure was the key effect noted at the single dose level, and based on body weight and feed consumption data from the study, the equivalent dose level was calculated to be 2533 mg/kg/day. This was considered the LOEL. ECETOC-derived assessment factors were used in the calculations.

Historically, sodium chloride (as a major ingredient in edible salt) has been commonly used in cooking and as a condiment and food preservative. Sodium chloride is categorised under GRAS (Generally Recognised as Safe) by the FDA (U.S. Food and Drug Administration) and the average daily levels of sodium intake for adults range from 2 to 5 grams. The Recommended Daily Intake (RDI) was 17 mg/kg, while the Acceptable Daily Intake (ADI) was 180 mg/kg of sodium expressed as sodium chloride. A technical report by WHO and the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) recommended the consumption of less than 5 grams sodium chloride (or 2 grams sodium) per day as a population nutrient intake goal, while ensuring that the salt is iodized (WHO, 2003).
